I really like the different materials in this image. I think the steel, wood and glass really compliment each other, with each different texture giving a different feel. I also like the varying lines in the image, and their patterns bring more interest to the subject.

This is a perfect example of what I like about buildings and architecture, and also an excellent example of why I like them.

This week in image of the week:

stone pillar

This is part of the facade of the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead. I think stone is an amazing material to work with and sculpt, it’s really versatile. And this photo shows how versatile it can be with the scrolls of the pillar, sitting nicely next to the lines of the letters and architrave.

At the moment the gallery’s holding the Wirral Spring Art & Photography Exhibition which is held there yearly. I only heard about it this year so I went along to take a look (mostly at the photography, no surprise there!) and there were some excellent photographs on display. It really got me motivated to go out and get shooting!

Discovering French Architecture

May 9, 2008

chateau gardens

These photographs were taken in Vannes, Brittany, in France. I love buildings and architecture and France is a great place to see them.

cobbled streetI’d never been to France before so I was looking forward to visiting the medieval towns and cities.

I’ve read about France, and I’ve seen some programs about the lovely towns and cities, so I couldn’t wait to visit one. And I wasn’t disappointed.

leaning medival house

Yes, some of the buildings were leaning that much! It’s a wonder that they were still standing.

view thro’ church door

I couldn’t believe how close the buildings were to the church. The church seemed to spring out of nowhere when you turned the corner of a street. I wonder which they built first!

I’d love to go back and spend a bit more time with my camera, it was a little tricky this time as we had two kids in tow…

Image of the Week #4

January 14, 2008

This week in image of the week:

lifeguard hutI live on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water, so you will start to notice that the sea theme appears often in my photographs.

This picture was shot with my usual camera at sunset with the sun setting behind me and to the left. I think it looks good so close up and fills the frame nicely.

Have you noticed the mistake? I thought I would leave it in to show you, It’s not straight. But somehow the building doesn’t look too bad! This is a constant problem for me and very annoying. I always take photos slightly off to the right no matter how hard I try not too. Good job the solution is simple, just correct it in Photoshop Elements. But it does look like I need to go shopping for a tripod.

I really like this photograph, I know it’s not quite as pretty to look at as the wooden Bay Watch type that you see in California, but it does have it’s own appeal!

Thanks
