This is part of the facade of the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead. I think stone is an amazing material to work with and sculpt, it’s really versatile. And this photo shows how versatile it can be with the scrolls of the pillar, sitting nicely next to the lines of the letters and architrave.
At the moment the gallery’s holding the Wirral Spring Art & Photography Exhibition which is held there yearly. I only heard about it this year so I went along to take a look (mostly at the photography, no surprise there!) and there were some excellent photographs on display. It really got me motivated to go out and get shooting!

Image of the Week #22

There’s something iconic about washing lines. It maybe all those cartoons I’ve watched with the characters sat in a pair of underpants, or dragging a line of washing along the road, it always makes me laugh.
There’s just something that draws the writers to them. It probably goes back to their childhood (a guilty one). Kids, mud and clean washing they just don’t mix!
This at least is a peaceful washing line soaking up the early morning sun.

Jodrell Bank Visit
May 16, 2008

I have been trying to get to Jodrell Bank for years but never managed it, I’ve actually tried a few times and got lost! But on Monday I made it.
Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics is the home of the Lovell Radio Telescope which was built back in 1956 and in 1957 it tracked Sputnik.
Apart from the scientific importance of the telescope it has become a landmark in the area as it can be seen for miles around.
It is an amazing piece of construction, even though it’s huge (there’s no other way to put it) it has a real elegance and I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say I think it looks absolutely beautiful.
We went to the visitor centre which is right next to the telescopes control room, they had loads of information on how it was built and on what it does.
We didn’t get to see it all and I can’t wait to go back again.
They also have a twice monthly podcast by the astronomers talking about what they are doing, you can find them at the Jodcast.net which again is full of information.
It’s amazing the amount of information you can get from these sites and learn about astronomy, and the different projects that the telescope is involved with.
I was really excited to be able to visit it and get so close, for some reason I was surprised by how close visitors can get.
There has been talk recently about maybe closing it.
I truly hope they don’t do this as it’s a fantastic resource at our fingertips, and by that I mean the general public never mind what it means to the scientists.
Go and visit it now while you’ve got the chance.
I know I fell in love with the place, it was definitely worth the wait!

How’s my P365 going?
May 15, 2008
Sunset from my window.
It’s been a while since I mentioned my Project 365 a photo a day for a year. It’s starting to build up nicely now I’m well into my third month. I can’t believe how fast that has gone. So here are some of my favourites for April. I can start to see the year panning out through photographs which is interesting, I can imagine it will be great to look back on in the future.
my son’s new light.
But April was a hard month to do, I had trouble thinking of what to shoot everyday but I expected that it wasn’t all going to be plain sailing.

TPB Monthly Round Up #4
May 13, 2008
This is the monthly round up for April, although a little late! It was a strange month April for me whether it was photography, blogging or life in general, I can’t put my finger on why, it was just a funny month. It just meant my timings are out a bit and I’m still playing catch up.
What I did find in April was some really good sites for education and learning more about this hobby of mine. They are great resources and if I’m not too careful I could lose myself in them for days.
I found a link to the first blog while reading another article, it’s called Pioneer Women (the blog that is) and they have a photography site that is full of information and tutorials. They keep it nice and simple which makes it easy to read, and brilliant for beginners as well as others brushing up on new skills.
I use Photoshop Elements for my editing needs and I have been looking for a site that covers it well. As well as the above site that cover editing I also found this site, Epic Edits by Brian Auer. As it says it is a great resource for the aspiring hobbyist (which I am), he blends his photography and teaching about editing well, so it’s not just a site full of tutorials and nothing else.
And finally if you’ve read the early posts on this blog you may remember that I have aspirations to get into stock photography in the future. Well actually microstock photography, but I don’t know very much about it. I’ve just found some sites selling microstock images that I’ve flicked through, but I don’t know much more than that.
Well I’ve come across Microstock Diaries by Lee Torrens who is a keen amateur photographer, and he talks about his experiences and exploits in the microstock industry. It’s great because he’s documenting his journey as a stock photographer, and he’s not an expert (yet) so I can relate to what he is saying without feeling overwhelmed, and that makes it feel achievable. Just what I was looking for!

Image of the Week #21

This week in image of the week:

This is one of the breathing towers for the Kingsway Mersey Tunnel. It’s a very imposing building on the skyline looking over to Liverpool where you can see it’s sister.
Although it’s not the prettiest structure in the world it still has it’s own charm. You can walk right underneath it (as I did) so I couldn’t fit it all in the frame, I would have to be in the middle of the River Mersey if I did. But when you do see it in full it looks a little like a huge pair of speakers!
It doesn’t apologize for what it is and does have some nice geometric qualities. It’s an interesting statement for something that’s just a really big fan…

Do You Use a Point and Shoot or a DSLR?
May 10, 2008
I found a new tool to try out on the blog - web polls. I thought it would be an interesting tool to use and interesting to see the different answers. I know I always like to take part in a good poll and see the results, so now I’m having a go at one myself. And it’s a pretty basic one to get started with!
Question: Seeing as I use a point and shoot camera, but I am also thinking about buying a DSLR. I thought it would be interesting to see what everybody else uses?
So here is my poll, and feel free to join in:
Opinion Polls & Market Research
I’ll also place it in the sidebar so it’s easy to find. Happy voting!

Discovering French Architecture
May 9, 2008
These photographs were taken in Vannes, Brittany, in France. I love buildings and architecture and France is a great place to see them.
I’d never been to France before so I was looking forward to visiting the medieval towns and cities.
I’ve read about France, and I’ve seen some programs about the lovely towns and cities, so I couldn’t wait to visit one. And I wasn’t disappointed.
Yes, some of the buildings were leaning that much! It’s a wonder that they were still standing.
I couldn’t believe how close the buildings were to the church. The church seemed to spring out of nowhere when you turned the corner of a street. I wonder which they built first!
I’d love to go back and spend a bit more time with my camera, it was a little tricky this time as we had two kids in tow…

Image of the Week #20

This is actually the closet I have ever been to a giraffe, and close up they look even bigger. It was taken at Pont Scorff Zoo in Brittany, France. They’re one of my favorite animals so I really enjoyed being on the viewing platform and getting so close.
I used my usual point and shoot Traveler DC-5080 and I’ve done nothing to the photograph in post production other than resize it for the blog.
