clown sculptureThis week in image of the week:

With it being my first week of taking part in Project 365, a photo a day for a year. I thought I would use one of the photographs I took this week.

This is a sculpture of a clown at the entrance of New Brighton, which back in victorian times was as big a seaside resort as Blackpool, it even had a taller tower. But it went into decline and lost a lot of it’s attractions, until recently when there has been some new investment to help the town regain it’s former glory. The clown sculpture at the entrance to New Brighton was one of these additions and caused a lot of controversy when it was made and put up.

I managed to dodge the traffic and get onto the roundabout on which it stands for a nice close up. Although the sun caused some problems reflecting off the metal (which was part of it’s design).

lighthouseThis week in image of the week:

This is a shot of Perch Rock Lighthouse in New Brighton, Wirral. It was an extremely windy day as you can see from the tide which is the River Mersey, so I had to steady myself on Fort Perch Rock to my right.

I love the color gradient of the sky in this photograph with the lighthouse to one side as if looking at the scene itself!

I would have gone back on a less windy day but the color of the sky was so deep and there were no clouds (not at the top anyway), so it was just too good an opportunity to miss.

And on my little camera with no tripod I think it has come out quite well. It was way too windy to try the digital zoom even if I had had a tripod. But if I had zoomed in on the lighthouse I would have missed that lovely deep blue sky at the top.

sunset beach

This week in image of the week:

This is a photo I took recently near to where I live, the sun was just setting. Shooting into the sun has silhouetted the scene nicely and I used the grass in the front of the picture to give some depth to it.

It wasn’t a planned photo I was just taking a walk, so I only had my camera with me. The only problem being it was a very windy night and it was hard to keep still, so I steadied myself on a fence to take the shot (into the wind!).

iron gate

This week in image of the week:

I seem to get onto to a topic and then get stuck on it! I have another gate this week, but a very different one from last week.

This is an old Church gate, actually one of the gates to get into Birkenhead Priory one of the oldest buildings on the Wirral.

I just liked the way that the iron gate is rusting with the stone pillar propping it up at the end. It adds depth to the gate and makes it more interesting, aging it.

The more photographs I take the more I can see my own style or preference for different types of photography emerging. With a definite lean towards industrial and architectural subjects, that I think are fascinating and have wonderful patterns and texture to them.

white gate
This week in image of the week:

This is one of the first photographs I took on my digital camera, using a mini tripod resting on a low wall and using 2x digital zoom.

What attracted me was the old wooden gate that seemed to be disappearing into the green foliage around it. I like gates and windows, anything that is a frame or being framed. They have that inviting quality whether they look like they are an entrance or an exit, they draw you in.

And I had to take full opportunity of the brilliant sunny day!

HMS VictoryThis week in image of the week:

I thought I would continue on from last weeks image when I visited Portsmouth, to another favourite image of mine.

I like taking nautical photographs because there is so much detail, pattern and colour in nautical subjects to make interesting photographs, that you can be spoilt for choice.

This is a picture of the HMS Victory which is in dry dock in Portsmouth Naval Yard. It was taken on my camera using 2 x digital zoom. I like the patterns that the rigging makes and the way that the sun is shining through the rigging and silhouetting it.

I took loads of pictures of the Victory and it was really hard to pick a favourite. I really like textures and patterns and there was lots of opportunities to find and capture them here.

Spinnaker TowerThis week in image of the week:

This is a picture I took of Spinnaker Tower when visiting Portsmouth a while ago.

The name Spinnaker and the shape of the tower refers to the spinnaker sail on a boat (the small one at the front!).

This tower is very impressive and dominates the skyline in the area.

But I think it looks even more impressive from below giving it even more height. I like the fact the image has some clouds, it makes the picture look more natural rather than a clear blue sky.

It has very strong shapes and patterns that I like and therefore attracts the sunlight well.

I took it with my usual camera and no tripod.

This week in image of the week:

tree and riverBack to trees! I do love taking images of trees, but that also goes for any type of landscape photography. I think it’s their individuality and the depth of detail that trees have that makes them so photogenic. Though I can get a bit carried away sometimes.

This photograph is a little different because while taken in a park it is looking out across a river to an urban landscape. Making it a little unusual, and a nice mix between the two styles.

This was a photo I took over a year ago. I do like to look back at my older photos, it lets me see them with new eyes. I start to see how I could improve on the shot and get ideas of how to do it differently.

I like the overall composition and it’s what I was trying to achieve. But could I have changed my position to avoid the shadow of the tree off camera? I like to do this with my images because next time I’m in that situation, then maybe I’ll notice these things easier and be able to compensate for them and get better results.

Only time will tell if that is true…

Image of the Week #4

January 14, 2008

This week in image of the week:

lifeguard hutI live on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water, so you will start to notice that the sea theme appears often in my photographs.

This picture was shot with my usual camera at sunset with the sun setting behind me and to the left. I think it looks good so close up and fills the frame nicely.

Have you noticed the mistake? I thought I would leave it in to show you, It’s not straight. But somehow the building doesn’t look too bad! This is a constant problem for me and very annoying. I always take photos slightly off to the right no matter how hard I try not too. Good job the solution is simple, just correct it in Photoshop Elements. But it does look like I need to go shopping for a tripod.

I really like this photograph, I know it’s not quite as pretty to look at as the wooden Bay Watch type that you see in California, but it does have it’s own appeal!

Thanks

Image of the Week #3

January 7, 2008

Well here we are in 2008, Happy New Year! After having a great Christmas and New Year, I am refreshed and looking forward to 2008 and writing to this blog.

vase of lightThis week in Image of the Week I am staying with the seasonal theme and looking at a shot I took over Christmas. Not one of my best shots, but I was trying out the macro function on my camera - fairly unsuccessfully!

This was the best shot. I didn’t use a tripod on this one but I did on some other shots without any more success.

I’m wondering what I am doing wrong?

It’s a good starting point though, at least I will be able to see any improvement!
