Breathing Tower

This is one of the breathing towers for the Kingsway Mersey Tunnel. It’s a very imposing building on the skyline looking over to Liverpool where you can see it’s sister.

Although it’s not the prettiest structure in the world it still has it’s own charm. You can walk right underneath it (as I did) so I couldn’t fit it all in the frame, I would have to be in the middle of the River Mersey if I did. But when you do see it in full it looks a little like a huge pair of speakers!

It doesn’t apologize for what it is and does have some nice geometric qualities. It’s an interesting statement for something that’s just a really big fan…

This week in image of the week:

giraffe

This is actually the closet I have ever been to a giraffe, and close up they look even bigger.  It was taken at Pont Scorff Zoo in Brittany, France. They’re one of my favorite animals so I really enjoyed being on the viewing platform and getting so close.

I used my usual point and shoot Traveler DC-5080 and I’ve done nothing to the photograph in post production other than resize it for the blog.

This week in image of the week:

stained glass window

This is one of those photos that I’ve found in the depths of my computer and thought, I completely forgot I took this shot!

It was taken last summer in Quimper, France in the Cathedrale St Corentin. I love taking photographs of buildings/architecture and churches are no exception. Although I do try to be respectful of others in the church who may find a lot of camera flashes a distraction.

So I took the shot of this stained glass window using no flash and it turned out better, due to the lack of flash silhouetting the walls, and with the sun coming through the window it really makes it stand out.

This week in image of the week:

rocking chair

This is a photograph of our rocking chair that we bought when our first child was born and we’ve used it for both of our children, so it has some sentimental value.

But unfortunately we have had to get rid of it recently, it was also a little worse for wear, but mainly because of moving my son into this bedroom and we needed the space.

I didn’t plan the shot I was just walking past the room one day and the scene caught my eye. The sun was just coming through the window right so I grabbed my camera and took the shot. It was only a couple of days later that we started to decorate, so I’m really glad I took the opportunity to take this photograph.

And that’s one of my favourite parts about photography, photographs are great ‘memory savers’. I didn’t know we would be getting rid of the chair when I took the shot, I say always take the opportunity because you never know when you may need it in the future.

So it’s an end of an era and our family is moving on, but we still have this photograph and the memories!

Ooh I’ve gone all emotional!

albert dock reflection

This week in image of the week:

This has got to be one of my all time favourite photographs (of mine), I love finding a chance to take a photo slightly differently and although on it’s own Albert Dock (in Liverpool) is a very interesting and historic subject I thought it’s reflection would look just as good.

It’s one of those photos that I didn’t plan, it just struck me as I was walking along. The restaurant hadn’t opened yet so the table at the window was empty except for the salt and pepper pots! You may also notice my son’s head appearing at the bottom of the shot.

I love the architecture of the old warehouses around Albert Dock and the contrast of the more modern restaurant facade frames the shot nicely. I’m sure there could be improvements to be made but I didn’t have much time between passers by and my son! For my first reflection shot though, I am pleased with the results.

This week in image of the week:

Conwy Valley

We went to Conwy in Snowdonia, Wales yesterday, it was a bitterly cold day although it was sunny (at times), and there was snow on the mountain tops. So there were some wonderful views of the mountains.

This is a shot of the Conwy valley from just outside of Conwy itself behind the castle.

I love Wales it’s a beautiful place full of history, I’ve done a lot of walking there when I was doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the scenery is stunning. Conwy itself is really old and the Castle is a great place to explore. We are going there later in the year on a camping holiday so there will no doubt be more photos to follow.

Royal Liver Buildings

This week in image of the week:

I’m off on my themes again. Following on from last week here is another photograph I have took of the Royal Liver Buildings. Again from the Mersey Ferry which I think gives you one of the best views of the building.

At the moment there is a lot of construction on the Pier Head which you can see in the photo, due to Liverpool being the 2008 Capital of Culture, so there are some improvements taking place that will be great when they are finished.

HMS Bulwalk

This week in image of the week:

This is a photograph of the HMS Bulwark while it was visiting Liverpool a couple of weeks ago, and is the newest in a long line of Bulwark’s. It’s a very impressive looking ship especially with the back drop of the Royal Liver Building, I took it while traveling on one of the Mersey Ferries so I got really close to it.

It was great to see it as my Uncle served on one of it’s predecessor’s the HMS Bulwark RO8 Commando Carrier, it was also used as an aircraft carrier but was scrapped in 1981 so seeing the new one is the nearest I’ll get to seeing my Uncle’s one.

I would have loved to have a look around it, but I can’t have everything can I!

footprints This week in image of the week (week 13 lucky for some!):

This was taken with my usual Traveler DC-5080 in late afternoon, on a very windy day.

I had just walked through a lovely piece of untouched wind blown sand and thought I would take a photo of it with the sun in the background.

I don’t know about you but I love finding a bit of sand that nobody else has been through and make it my own, so to speak!

Although with my point and shoot I can’t do much with the sun, and it is a bit over powering in the photo. I do still like the creation and composition of the photograph, I just need to do something with the sun!

clown sculptureThis week in image of the week:

With it being my first week of taking part in Project 365, a photo a day for a year. I thought I would use one of the photographs I took this week.

This is a sculpture of a clown at the entrance of New Brighton, which back in victorian times was as big a seaside resort as Blackpool, it even had a taller tower. But it went into decline and lost a lot of it’s attractions, until recently when there has been some new investment to help the town regain it’s former glory. The clown sculpture at the entrance to New Brighton was one of these additions and caused a lot of controversy when it was made and put up.

I managed to dodge the traffic and get onto the roundabout on which it stands for a nice close up. Although the sun caused some problems reflecting off the metal (which was part of it’s design).
